Phillips stethoscopes are the choice of medical professionals all over the globe

Added: 09/21/2005

There are many different medical technique companies that produce devices for listening or auscultation. Phillips is just one of such companies, but it has gained a reputation of high quality technique producer. Phillips stethoscopes are well known all around the globe. And the variety of stethoscopes Phillips company produces is also pretty impressive: from simple audible stethoscopes to complex electronic stethoscopes.

The first stethoscope was invented in 1816 by Rene Theophile Hyacinthe Laennec, a young French physician. At that time so called "Immediate Auscultation" was in use. Doctor had to place his (her) ear to the chest of the patient. Laennec felt embarrassed to place his ear to the chest of his female patients. To solve this confusing problem he rolled several pieces of paper and put one end to his ear and another one to his patient's chest. And he had discovered the fact that sound not only was perfectly transmitted through the paper but also had become louder and clearer.

Since that time a new method called "Mediate Auscultation" came in use. On March 8, 1817 Laennec made the first note of using this new method while examining a 40 years old woman Marie-Melanie Basset. He didn't want to use any special term for his great invention - he preferred word "Le Cylindre"(cylinder). But Laennec colleagues decided to give this device a special name. That is how word "Stethoscope" appeared. Laennec had even started a shop in his home - with a simple lathe he made several models of this new device. And even this pretty simple model of stethoscope had two options - for examining the heart and for examining the lungs (There was a wooden piece that fitted into stethoscope cone for examining the heart). In 1819 he published a treatise about listening or auscultation as it is also called. But Laennec was not only the inventor of stethoscope, he also described the auscultatory signs for the first time. Many of these signs like 'bruit','rales', 'bronchophony' are still used in modern medicine.

These days' stethoscopes are being produced by a great number of different companies. Most of the stethoscopes being produced are acoustic stethoscope - they are more or less a modification of Laennec stethoscope model. But modern technology also made it possible to produce so called electronic stethoscope for better results. Phillips is just one of great number of companies that produce stethoscopes, but it became one of the leading companies in auscultation technology. Many doctors in different countries work with Phillips stethoscopes.

Because of their high quality Phillips stethoscopes became well known. But what is also great about Phillips stethoscopes is that they are available in a huge variety of models so it is easy to choose the stethoscope just for you among Phillips stethoscopes. Philips Company can offer you simple models of acoustic stethoscopes at as small price as $10-$20 or much more advanced models. Electronic Phillips stethoscopes are also available, and with these devices you will definitely get optimum quality. These electronic models are lightweight but their improved filtering circuitry can give you a wonderful loud and clear sound. Through the several years of usage these electronic Phillips stethoscopes have proved to be reliable and durable even in very difficult environments.
