The main thing, when you want to do sugaring, is to make the sugaring paste become liquid without getting extremely hot. It is believed that if the paste becomes very hot while boiling, it gets harder while getting cool and it has to be even hotter to become liquid again. They also advise to boil the paste on low fire and for a longer time.
It is also recommended to prepare some small portions instead of a large one. The paste gets thicker every time you boil it. Besides, it seems to get thicker as it is cooked longer. That is why don't make your portions long beforehand.
For making the paste you should have about 8 cups of sugar, a cup of water and 1 cup of lemon juice.
Use a large heavy saucepan because usually sugar foams up when boiled. Put all the ingredients into the pan, mix and boil them at medium temperatures. Stir the mixture gently till your candy thermometer shows 130 degrees C. While cooking, the blend will become of an amber color. Let it cool after taking the mixture off the heat and then pour it into some container. You'd better use a wide shallow container.
After cooling the paste in the container, make sure it is not solid but quite thick. It is considered to be thin when it pours like honey. If it doesn't flow, it is very thick and will be still hot by the time of use. The consistency required is rather thick but at the same time moldable. If the mixture is extremely slow and sluggish to flow when the jar is tilted, or when you put a finger into it and some dent is left in the paste when you take out your finger, it is right. When heated, the mixture should be a little thinner if compared to liquid honey.
You can experiment a little while preparing the recipe for sugaring method of hair removal. For example, when the paste is very thin, you can reduce the quantity of liquid or add more sugar. If the mixture is very thick you may reduce the quantity of sugar or add some liquid.
If you are going to use your paste again, you may microwave it (but be careful because it is getting hot very quickly) or put the container with the paste into boiled water for several minutes.
Before putting the mixture on your skin, check its temperature but very carefully. You may test it on the palm of your hand. There the skin is less sensitive and tough. In order to spread the mixture you may use some craft stick, for instance a medical tongue depressor. They say that the paste is advised to use while it stays very warm. In that state it is thinner while spreading. So, you should take a small portion of paste and try to spread it as thin as you can on the area in the direction as your hair grows. After that press a strip on the paste very firmly. Then pull of the strip in the direction against your hair growth. While pulling the strip right back, but not up, hold the skin taut. You may use one strip several times. You will need only water and soap to wash it.
The first trial of the sugaring method of hair removal is probably the worst but it will become easier if you do it regularly and the hair will grow finer. When you sto using the method of hair removal for some time the hair usually gets thick and you'll have to start over. Some women consider sugaring method of hair removal to be less painful than waxing.
